For four years, Mr. Fuentes served as Vice President of Project Management for Playa Hotels & Resorts (Playa), a private venture focused on the acquisition and development of all-inclusive beachfront resorts in Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. At the time, the company owned 17 beach resorts.
In this role, Francisco oversaw both new build and renovation projects, demonstrating an exceptional talent for creating beautiful, functional and profitable resorts under very demanding time constraints. Among his first assignments in 2007 was the renovation and expansion of two hotels located in Puerto Vallarta and Punta Cana. He also provided permitting and construction feasibility analysis for the prospects to acquire land for development in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.
During 2008, Francisco managed a $64 million reconstruction and redesign of three AMResorts properties (totaling 1,500 guestrooms) in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. The properties were acquired from Sunscape in late 2007, and successfully reopened under the Dreams brand December 2008.
Additionally, Francisco initiated and completed the $85 million construction of the Barceló Hotel in Los Cabos, Mexico, which successfully opened to the public on December 2009, two years after the acquisition of the property by Playa. Final expansion was completed in 2010 while under operation.
“Ken and Francisco created beautiful, functional and, importantly, profitable resorts for Playa. The physical products are very impressive but what, in my opinion, is most impressive is how they were able to conduct their work under very demanding time constraints and in locations with a number of challenges in obtaining labor and/or supplies. Their achievements are amazing compared to anyone else I have ever worked with on any hotel construction undertakings. I cannot say enough about the talent level, work ethic, and personal character of this team.”
